Why should I get a Whole House Humidifier? There are a several reasons to have a humidifier installed today. Humidification in the air is helpful for all wood floors, wood furniture, and pianos. Your skin needs humidity to function properly. Your sinus’ and lungs need moisture too. There are many more reasons a humidifier can help you.
Humidifiers will help relieve congestion and sinus infections and can help with symptoms of eczema, itchy skin, dry eyes, nosebleeds, sore throats and dry nasal passages. Humidification will also help keep your lips and skin from cracking. Lack of moisture on your skin can make wrinkles more prominent.
In Colorado Springs the air is already dry. When your furnace is running it can decrease the humidity level down by over 10%. Your skin needs the humidity levels to be at least 30 to 40% to stay healthy. The ideal humidity for comfort is about 50%! We hardly see those levels naturally.
Low humidity can also cause your walls, wood furniture, and hardwood floors to dry out. Dry air can also cause your electronic devices to fall victim to static electric discharges. This could lead to expensive repairs or replacements. Too much humidity can also be a problem, although it is pretty uncommon in dry regions.
How does a humidifier work?
A whole house humidifier is connected to your forced air furnace and your water supply. It will typically function automatically. You won’t have to refill it every day like a room unit. Unlike portable units, a whole home humidifier continually monitors the relative humidity levels. It will deliver the right amount of moisture to your home, making it more comfortable. It does this by passing air from the duct system through a water panel, which stays wet during operation. That air is then recirculated through the home.
You can typically lower your thermostat setting when the humidity level is normal. Humidification in the air will hold heat better than dry air, which means you can tolerate a degree or two less. Lowering the temperature will help you save money on your heating bill, but it is important to have your humidifier maintained once a year. They tend to become inefficient or leak over time. We can do this when we are performing yearly maintenance on your furnace. If you don’t have it checked you run the risk of leaks and spreading bacteria and mold, which can induce allergy and asthma symptoms.
