Surge Protectors

Benefits of installing a Surge Protector on your Furnace & Air Conditioner

Lightning Storm

Happy Summer Colorado Springs! The mornings are becoming beautifully warm, the A/C’s are keeping the houses cool and comfortable, and we are having those crazy afternoon thunderstorms! There are several benefits to having surge protectors hardwired to protect all your HVAC equipment. We get pretty crazy lightning during those storms! Power surges can utterly destroy sensitive electronic equipment. Modern HVAC appliances and controls have an increasing amount of technology that is more susceptible to power anomalies.

A surge protector can be installed while we are performing maintenance on your furnace or air conditioner. In your furnace and air conditioner, you have +$2000 worth of parts that can be damaged during electrical surges like lightning strikes. From your thermostat to the main circuit board, surge protectors are an inexpensive measure to protect and extend the life of your equipment.

I was personally affected by the massive July 2016 hail storm that rocked the Powers corridor. A lightning strike hit the transformer across the street from my house. The surge traveled up one leg of power to my house and fried 50% of all my electronics, including the circuit board on my air conditioner. We were selling surge protectors at that time, but I did not have one installed at my house.

After the storm passed I quickly realize that I had to get my A/C fixed. It was late July and very hot. I found out the circuit board was special order and about 1 week out. My wife and kids were very unhappy that week! I ended up replacing the board and adding a surge protector. True story, we were hit with another lightning strike almost exactly 1 year later. The A/C survived! I lost some electronics this round, but not the A/C. I ended up installing a surge arrester in my main electrical panel after the second time.
